Katsuhiko Umehara is a Japanese politician who served as the mayor of Sendai from 2005 to 2009. Born on March 29, 1954, in Sendai, he studied at the University of Tokyo, graduating from the Faculty of Law in 1978. He worked in the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry as well as in the private sector, living in Thailand and the United States, which enabled him to speak fluent English. Umehara chose not to run for a second term as mayor in 2009. He enjoys swimming, archaeology, and practices judo, holding a black belt.
