Katsumi Sugawara (1911-1988) was a prominent Japanese poet from Miyagi Prefecture. He began writing poetry influenced by the works of poet Sisei Yumeno. Although a former member of the Japanese Communist Party, he was expelled for dissent in 1961. Sugawara continued his literary activities, becoming a key figure in the New Japanese Literature Association and teaching at the Japan Literature School. His poetry often reflected social issues, and he was known for his long poem ‘The Crowd Only Shows Its Back’ following the death of activist Michiko Kaba. He published several poetry collections throughout his career.
