Kawano gained recognition for winning an Honorable Mention at the Tenkaichi Manga Award in December 1999 for his work 'Left-Handed Sally.' He began serializing the manga 'Uto,' which focuses on speed skating, in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine starting with Issue 11 in November 2005.
