Born on May 6, 1935, in Iwate Prefecture, he graduated from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in 1960 and completed his master's degree in English literature at the University of Tokyo in 1963. He has held various academic positions, including assistant, lecturer, and professor at Kobe University and Chuo University, where he focused on British literature. He retired in 2006, becoming an emeritus professor.
