He holds the title of Grandmaster and learned to play chess at the age of thirteen, inspired by his strong-playing brother. Arkell achieved the title of International Master in 1985, followed by Grandmaster in 1995. Notably, he won the English Chess Championship in 2008 and was a co-runner-up in the British Chess Championship in 2001. His highest Elo rating was 2545 in 1996.
