Keith Dwight Millis (1915–1992) was an American metallurgical engineer renowned for inventing ductile iron. Educated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he conducted critical WWII research to substitute for chromium. His experiments with iron and magnesium yielded ductile iron in 1943, enhancing strength and ductility through spheroidal graphite formation. Millis and colleagues secured a U.S. patent in 1949, promoting ductile iron commercially. He co-founded the Ductile Iron Society to advocate for the material's use. Millis's contributions significantly impacted metallurgical engineering before his passing in 1992.
