He initiated a special unit in Barlinnie Prison, focusing on community treatment for both prisoners and staff. His innovative approach involved collaborative decision-making and programming, especially for violent inmates like Jimmy Boyle. Murray was educated at Inverness Technical High School and originally worked as a coachbuilder. He gained wider recognition by participating in the Channel 4 programme After Dark in 1988.
