He served as the public school superintendent for Coffeyville, Kansas, where he established the McFarland Trade School. McFarland later became the superintendent of the Topeka school system, which was central to the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. He was known to be a strong supporter of the political and racial status quo of his time.
