He served as the MLA for Victoria in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1988 to 2003, representing the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. A trained plumber, he ran his own plumbing and heating business for over 20 years before entering politics. MacAskill was appointed Minister of Natural Resources in 1997 and successfully re-elected several times, ultimately choosing not to run again in 2003.
