Kenshin Sumitaku (1961-1987) was a Japanese poet known for his impactful haikus during the latter half of the 20th century. Born Harumi Sumitaku, he adopted the pen name Kenshin, meaning 'devotion'. Diagnosed with acute leukemia at the age of 23, he devoted the last twenty months of his life to writing poetry, producing 281 haikus that resonated deeply with his generation. His literary fate was shorter even than other melancholic figures of Japanese poetry. He is affectionately remembered as 'the poet of the soul's haiku' in Japan.
