He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1936 and earned his doctorate in Paris under Élie Cartan in 1938. Yano worked at the Tokyo Institute of Technology until his retirement in 1972, with a brief period at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. A specialist in differential geometry and tensor analysis, he published around 300 scientific articles and authored eight books.
