Khalid Bakdash (1912 - July 24, 1995) was a Syrian politician of Kurdish descent who joined the Communist Party in 1930. He became the party's leader in Damascus by 1931 and was appointed General Secretary of the Syrian-Lebanese Communist Party in 1933. Bakdash was the first Arab communist member of parliament and founded the newspaper Sawt al-Shaab in 1937. As General Secretary until his death, he maintained a Marxist-Leninist stance, opposed Gorbachev's perestroika, and was a prominent figure in Arab communism.
