General Khamtai Siphandone was a prominent political figure in Laos, serving as President since February 24, 1998. He was the General Secretary of the Lao Revolutionary Party, the only legal party in Laos, from November 24, 1992, to March 21, 2006. Holding significant power, he was Defense Minister and Commander of the Army in 1975. He became Prime Minister following the establishment of the presidential republic in 1991 and was influential during the transition of leadership as key figures in the party passed away.
