Choren I, born Mesrob Paroyan on November 24, 1914, in Nicosia, served as the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church of the Great House of Cilicia. After studying in Cyprus, he joined the priest seminary in Antelias, becoming a monk-priest in 1937. Promoted to bishop in 1947, he led the Armenian prelature in Lebanon from 1951. Chosen as Catholicos in 1963, he sought reconciliation with Echmiadzin while overseeing significant church construction and promoting ecumenical relations. Due to health issues, he appointed Karekin Sarkissian as coadjutor in 1977.
