He was a half-brother to the 52nd Da'i and became a rival claimant to the title of Dai-al-Mutlaq. His claims to succession were contested by Mufaddal Saifuddin, who asserted his position as the rightful Dai. The Bombay High Court upheld Mufaddal Saifuddin's claim, dismissing challenges associated with Qutbuddin's lineage.
