Kim Dae-jung (January 6, 1924 – August 18, 2009) was a South Korean politician who served as the president of South Korea from 1998 to 2003. He entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party's new wing and was an opposition politician advocating for democratization against military dictatorships from the 1960s through the 1980s. After several unsuccessful presidential bids, he won the presidency in 1997, becoming the first opposition candidate to do so. He is known for the Sunshine Policy towards North Korea and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his efforts in democracy and reconciliation.
