Originally from Abashiri, Hokkaido, he debuted in 1955 and adopted the ring name Kimura Shigetaka in 1972. He became a judge of the second division in 1973, rising to the top division and notable roles in subsequent years, demonstrating substantial administrative skills throughout his career.
