Murata debuted in 1975 with the story 'Suichū no koe' and won the Kyushu Art Festival Literature Prize. She founded a literary magazine called 'Happyō' in 1985. Over the years, she received several prestigious awards, including the Akutagawa Prize in 1987 and the Murasaki Shikibu Prize in 1997, highlighting her contribution to Japanese literature.
