In 2021, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Japanese-American Syukuro Manabe for their research on the physical modeling of Earth's climate and measuring fluctuations and predicting global warming, sharing the prize with Italian theoretical physicist Giorgio Parisi.
