Kofi Awoonor (born George Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor-Williams; March 13, 1935 – September 21, 2013) was a Ghanaian poet and author. His work blends the traditions of his native Ewe people with contemporary and religious symbolism to portray Africa during the decolonization era. Initially writing under the name George Awoonor-Williams, Awoonor also published as Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor. He taught African literature at the University of Ghana and was tragically killed in the September 2013 Westgate shopping mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya, while attending the Storymoja Festival.
