Kōichi Kodama is a retired Japanese professional shogi player, born on February 21, 1951, in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. He started as an amateur player, winning competitions during high school. Kodama joined the Japan Shogi Association's apprentice school in 1971, advancing through the ranks to achieve 8-dan by April 1, 2016. During his career, he was awarded the Kōzō Masuda Award for his innovative opening strategy and received recognition for his contributions to shogi. He officially retired from professional play on August 10, 2011.
