Kōichirō Tomita was a Japanese astronomer known for discovering nine asteroids between 1978 and 1982 from the Observatoire de Calern. He, along with amateur astronomers F. W. Gerber and Minoru Honda, discovered the comet C/1964 L1. Tomita authored a book on comets in Japanese, which was translated into Russian in 1982. The asteroid (2391) Tomita is named in his honor. He made significant contributions to both asteroid and comet discovery during his lifetime. Tomita was born on February 16, 1925, and passed away on May 22, 2006.
