Wakui founded the new wave band Screen in 1980 and has since participated in several music groups, including Moments, Tokyo's People, Kōji Wakui F.B.I., Bonzo Dog Tokyo Doo Dah Band, and the BMW. Notably, he released a Bob Dylan-approved Japanese cover album in 2007 and collaborated with renowned artist Naoki Urasawa for live performances and album production.
