Kōjirō Irikura is a Japanese seismologist and geoscientist, born on August 22, 1940, in Qingdao, China. He is a professor emeritus at Kyoto University and earned his Ph.D. in science there in 1983. Irikura is renowned for developing the empirical Green's function method to recreate strong earthquake tremors using recorded seismic waves from minor quakes. He also devised the 'strong ground motion prediction recipe' (Irikura Recipe), which is utilized by the government and local authorities for creating hazard maps to predict future seismic activities.
