He served as the director of the Swiss Federal Research Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape, and was a professor at the Institute for Atmosphere & Climate at ETH Zurich and in the Department of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering at EPFL Lausanne. Steffen developed measurement methods that contributed greatly to the understanding of the dynamics of the cryosphere.
