He also served as acting mayor of It Bilt from September 20, 1944, to February 24, 1945. In 1945, Van der Vlis was succeeded by Jan Dijkstra and was sentenced to four years in prison in 1946, losing his right to hold public office. He is the father of Arie and grandfather of Tristan van der Vlis.
