He served as the former chairman of Tokai Gakuen, the former president of Bukkyō University, and the former chairman of Bukkyō Educational Institution. He was also the former supreme head of the Jōdo-shū sect of Buddhism. His academic focus was on Buddhist studies, and he held a Doctor of Literature degree. Mizutani was honored with the title of Jūyon-i (Junior Fourth Rank) in his lifetime.
