In 2004, he established the Kumar Malavalli Endowed Chair in Storage Systems Research at UC Santa Cruz with a $1 million donation. Malavalli was honored with a doctor of science degree in 2013 and has been recognized as a member of the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame.
