Kurt Alder was a German chemist born on July 10, 1902, and died on June 20, 1958. He studied at the University of Kiel where he was a student and then assistant to Otto Diels. He obtained his doctorate in 1916 and continued his research there, becoming a lecturer in 1930 and a professor in 1934. From 1936 to 1940, he worked as a research director for Bayer in Leverkusen. He taught applied and technical chemistry at the University of Cologne, serving as a professor and director of the chemistry institute from 1940 until his death. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Otto Diels in 1950.
