Halonen served in various military roles, including as an instructor and commander, climbing the ranks to lieutenant general in 2015. He has led various military units and held significant positions within the Finnish Defense Forces. He also served as the chairman of the Military Sports Federation. Halonen is married to Maarit Pölönen since 2015.
