Lane Ryo Hirabayashi (October 17, 1952 – August 8, 2020) was a prominent American historian specializing in the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans. He advocated for using the term 'incarceration' instead of the euphemisms 'internment,' 'evacuation,' or 'relocation.' A founding member of The National Coalition for Redress/Reparations, he sought reparations for the injustices faced by Japanese Americans. Hirabayashi held teaching positions at San Francisco State University and UCLA, where he emphasized community empowerment and cultural resistance. He authored several publications, including a notable work on his uncle's landmark Supreme Court case.
