He began his music studies in Copenhagen in 1975 and received composition training from notable instructors including Daniel Börtz and Sven-David Sandström. He has been a professor of composition and instrumentation at the Royal College of Music since 1992 and became vice principal at the Edsberg Music Institute in 1998. Ekström's diverse output includes orchestral pieces, works for solo instruments, and even a rock music career as a studio musician.
