Riedel initially competed for East Germany and later for unified Germany. His notable achievements include winning a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also secured five gold medals at the World Championships and holds a personal best of 71.50 meters, which ranks among the top throws in discus throw history.
