He trained as a premier lieutenant at the Naval Academy, achieving ranks including captain and admiral. Christophersen has had a distinguished military career with various commands and staff positions, including service in Iraq. In 2008, he was appointed to the royal court, and he has received multiple service awards. He is married to Pia Kierulff Andersen and resides in Kongens Lyngby.
