Leah Miriam Lowenstein (née Heller) was an American nephrologist, academic administrator, and cellist. Born on June 17, 1930, she made history in 1982 as the first woman to serve as dean of a co-educational medical school in the U.S. at Jefferson Medical College. Before that, she was an associate dean and professor of medicine and biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine. Additionally, Lowenstein served as a medical advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Health during the Carter administration and was a strong advocate for the role of women in medicine.
