Leland H. Hartwell, born on October 30, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, is an American biologist and a Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology or Medicine for 2001. He is the president and director of the Seattle Cancer Research Center. His research has significantly contributed to understanding cell division, particularly through the study of cyclins, proteins that regulate the cycle of cell division. Hartwell's work alongside fellow scientists Paul Nurse and Tim Hunt helped unveil crucial mechanisms in cellular biology.
