Leigh Grant Vial was an Australian patrol officer and coastwatcher during World War II in Papua New Guinea. Known as the 'Man With the Golden Voice,' he was the first white person to summit Mount Wilhelm. In 1942, he was awarded the American Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism. Vial died in a plane crash in 1943 and is buried in Lae War Cemetery.
