Lena McEwan was the first woman to specialize in plastic surgery in Australia. She graduated with her MBBS from the University of Adelaide in 1949 and completed her FRCS and FRACS diplomas by 1958. Influential in surgical practices through her research on nerve injuries, she also led into gender reassignment surgery in 1976. McEwan worked in notable hospitals, becoming head of the Skin Unit at Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital. She was involved with the Medical Women's Society and passed away from ovarian cancer in 2011.
