Leo F. Ferris (1917-1993) was an influential American sports executive and businessman. He was pivotal in establishing the National Basketball Association (NBA), founding the Buffalo Bisons, a team that evolved to become the Atlanta Hawks. In 1946, he signed the first African American player in the National Basketball League. Ferris became the NBL's president in 1948 and facilitated its merger with the Basketball Association of America in 1949, forming the NBA. He is renowned for inventing the NBA's 24-second shot clock.
