Leon Midas Calmet Standifer, Jr. was an American soldier, novelist, and professor born on April 24, 1925. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an infantry scout and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart. He earned degrees from Mississippi State University and the University of Wisconsin, culminating in a Ph.D. in 1959. Standifer taught horticulture at Louisiana State University from 1961 until 1990, later becoming a professor emeritus. He married archeobotanist Marie Scott in 1957 and passed away on November 8, 2016.
