Leonard Philip Matlovich (July 6, 1943 – June 22, 1988) was an American Vietnam War veteran, racial relations trainer, and recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was the first openly gay service member to intentionally come out to the military in order to challenge their ban on homosexuals. Matlovich became a prominent figure in the 1970s LGBTQ movement, with his struggle for retention in the U.S. Air Force drawing national attention. His image was featured on the cover of Time magazine, making him a symbol for LGBTQ service members. In 2006, he was honored as a pioneer during LGBTQ History Month.
