Originally from Manchester, he initially trained as an accountant before discovering his literary talent. He began performing solo at folk music venues and later formed The Mrs Ackroyd Band. Over his career, Barker performed across the UK and internationally, including in Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and Canada. He published 78 volumes of English poetry and 24 albums, either as a solo performer or with his band.
