Lia Manoliu was a Romanian discus thrower of Moldovan descent, born on April 25, 1932, in Chișinău, Romania. She gained prominence by winning a gold medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Manoliu also secured bronze medals at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Her personal best throw was 62.06 meters, achieved in 1972. After retiring, she served as a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1976 and later became a member of the Romanian Parliament in 1992. She passed away on January 9, 1998, in Bucharest.
