Lionel Abrahams was a South African novelist, poet, editor, critic, essayist, and publisher born on 11 April 1928 in Johannesburg. Diagnosed with a cerebral disability, he used a wheelchair until the age of eleven. He is particularly known for his poetry and was mentored by Herman Charles Bosman. Abrahams published numerous poems, essays, and two novels, and founded Renoster Books in 1956, where he published works by notable authors. He married Jane Fox in 1986 and was awarded honorary doctorates in literature from two universities in the same year.
