Lloyd Berkner (1905-1967) was an American physicist and engineer known for inventing a device to measure electron density and altitude in the ionosphere, enhancing shortwave radio propagation theory. He initiated the International Geophysical Year (IGY) for global atmospheric research and served as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Berkner contributed to radar technology and early warning systems during his naval service. He also co-developed a theory for planetary atmospheric evolution and wrote over 100 papers and several books, including titles on rocketry and space science.
