Lorin Varencove Maazel (March 6, 1930 – July 13, 2014) was an American conductor, violinist, and composer. He made his stage debut at the age of eight and launched his professional career in 1953. By 1960, Maazel had established a strong reputation in European concert halls, although his career in the USA grew slowly initially. He later served as music director for several major orchestras including the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He was respected for his technique and precision in conducting.
