Lubomyr Taras Romankiw was a Ukrainian-Canadian materials scientist and engineer who worked at IBM. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta in 1955, and later earned both a master's degree and PhD from MIT in 1962. Romankiw was instrumental in developing a reading head for thin magnetic films, which greatly enhanced data storage for computers. He held over 65 patents and contributed significantly in the fields of magnetic materials, electrochemistry, and metallurgy. He received numerous accolades, including the Perkin Medal and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
