He began playing guitar at the age of eleven and launched his professional career in the 1940s as a drummer and singer. He formed a group called Lucky Wray and the Lazy Pine Wranglers with his brothers Link and Doug, later renamed Lucky Wray and the Palomino Ranch Hands. Lucky worked as a producer for his brother Link's albums and eventually referred to himself as Ray Vernon. He passed away in 1979 at the age of 55.
