He served as the president of the Brazilian Chess Confederation and was instrumental in promoting chess, particularly supporting GM Henrique Mecking. Tavares founded the Recife Chess Club and achieved notable recognition in chess, being a vice-champion and champion in Brazil. In medicine, he modernized cardiac practices in Brazil, introducing advanced instruments from England, and is regarded as one of the greatest figures in Pernambuco's 20th-century medicine.
