He competed in the men's bantamweight category at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Tamil Selvan earned silver medals in both the men's bantamweight event at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and the men's featherweight event at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. His contributions to sports were recognized when he was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award by the Government of India for the year 1977-78.
